Summer Surprises

011Despite being a creature of habit, I do enjoy the occasional surprise. This summer I’ve had a few:

The hummingbird activity at our feeders has been explosive. Derek is re-juicing almost every evening. We’re going to miss them when they migrate, but for now, we’re enjoying their company.

I’ve never seen that many hummingbirds in my life! My brother used to have maybe one in his yard. They’re lovely to see.
My sister-in-law surprised me by taking me to get a manicure when she was in town. I don’t usually get those. My nails look fabulous! 🙂

    • Thank you for your kind words, Patsy. Your support means a lot to me. I cried when I opened the box and saw my beautiful hummingbird. It was definitely one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received. It’s on a desk in our kitchen, so we can enjoy it every day. Have a fantastic weekend!

  10. OH, I’m so envious of all your hummingbird activity. I have 2, and they refuse to share a feeder. If one is there, and the other approaches, they both fly away!
Enjoy the remainder of your summer!

    • Each year our hummingbird activity has increased, but we’ve never seen this kind of action. I wish I’d been outside filming instead of through the kitchen window. We’d had a big storm and it was still thundering, I hope you have a great weekend, Dianna!

    • Thanks so much, Sylvia. With all of your critters, you’d definitely have the hummies, if you put out a feeder. Walmart sells inexpensive feeders…makes for great cheap entertainment. Yes, Patsy is a truly gifted artist. She draws the most adorable sea turtles. Have a great weekend! xo

I loved the video of all those gorgeous humming-birds! It looked so wet outside I thought you must have had a storm especially after seeing that wonderful cloud shot! You so kindly sent me some photos you took last year of your hummingbirds and I love them! The painting you were sent is beautiful – such a wonderful gift. Have fun when your sister visits and enjoy your weekend! xx

    • Hi Clare! Thank you so much for stopping by. I’m happy you enjoyed the post. You’re right, it was very wet that evening. Typically the hummies will continue feeding while it’s raining. On that day, we had a powerful storm with torrential rain. The poor hummies had to take shelter. Twenty minutes later, the rain turned to a drizzle and they came out in droves. They were starving! It was an amazing scene. I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend! xo

  29. Congrats on the book. Of course hummingbirds are my favorites. I don’t intentionally cater to them but I get a surprising number checking out the geraniums. Also the pink, red and yellow flowers on the succulents are a big hit right now. In fact I just went downstairs for another cup of coffee and a hummer was sticking its beak in a succulent flower on the front balcony.

    • Thanks so much, Roslyn. I’m happy to hear that you’re able to enjoy the hummingbirds at your house. Catering to these little fellas is a lot of maintenance, but definitely worth it. By the way, your photos today were fabulous! Enjoy your week!

As for surprises, it’s raining this morning and throughout the day…in August. We don’t get rain in August! It smells wonderful. I’ll pop on over to Amazon and do the pre-order now. Have a wonderfilled month.

  36. Wow! To have humming birds on a bird feeder is amazing – lovely painting and photo. Surprises bring a step of happiness into one’s life and I love that. Every day over the last few weeks has brought small lovely surprises but one unexpected was visiting a Walt Disney exhibition ‘The Art of Storytelling’ at the Nordic Watercolour Museum. (Located I the southern tip of an island north of Gothenbury) Enthralling, pure delight and such gentle joy. Hard to believe some of these drawings and films are over eighty years old!

    • Thanks so much, Nicki! Well, the book is far from finished, but having the draft done is a relief…now I can have fun with it. 🙂 Oh yes, the hummingbird action has been unbelievable this summer. They are such funny little creatures, and so combative. As for the framed saying…it’s what got me through to the end. This second book was much harder, perhaps because I didn’t have the contest deadline like I did with the first. Enjoy your week!
