When I was a kid, I loved to watch Leave it to Beaver. Looking back, I think what I liked the most about the show were the character’s nicknames—Whitey, Lumpy and of course, the Beave. While in elementary school, I never had a nickname, but I always wanted one.

Later, the show Happy Days became one of my favorites. With nicknames like The Fonz, Ralph Malph, and Potsie, it seemed everyone had a nickname except for me.

Then in high school, it happened. I finally got my first nickname. It was Nerd. My best friend who I’d known since we were eight years-old came up with the name and from then on, we were both Nerds. Even today, we rarely refer to each other by our real name, it just doesn’t sound right.

In college, I became, Jilly Bean, Jillow, Pill and Jillster. Later, I was Sleepy. For someone who’d never had a nickname, these days, I find myself answering to many names.

Do you have a nickname?

  2. I laugh at nerd Jill my daughter calls herself a nerd so no one else has to she says Ha! Mine was horrible. Once when I was training to be window dresser my boss stepped out of the window to get lunch and left me to tidy up the window. The big boss came by wondering where his head merchandiser was and asked why the junior was doing the cities best window display. he said this….”whats that bit of FLUFF doing in the window, where is Les? (the boss of me). Well from that day forward all the managers in the shops I visited called me FLUFFY! Ugh so Nerd is a good nickname if you ask me!

  3. Hmm…. I’m a natural redhead. Too many to remember. 🙂 Although my favorite is Aunt Nellie. When I was in my early 20’s I thought I was a bit too sophisticated for that nickname, but as I got older I cherished it. Now all my great nephews are using it, too.
